Pregnancy is one of the most challenging, arduous and yet a rewarding journey a woman goes through in her life. Over 9 months, a woman goes an extra mile to keep the baby healthy and safe and naturally she undergoes significant changes, both physically and emotionally.

But as a new mother, she has to remember that the post-partum period is even more crucial both for the health of the mother and the baby. However this advice is often overlooked by the new mothers and at our gynaecology clinic in Mumbai, we often treat patients who did not take this period seriously and consult only when complication arise.

If you are a new mother, one simple advice we can give you is extra cautious about this period, get all your postpartum check-ups performed without a miss, and follow the below recovery tips:

It’s going to be tough, so, rest –

On average, a baby wakes up every 3 hours. You may have to feed, change clothes and comfort him to sleep and this can be exhausting for you alone leaving you short of sleep every day for months at a stretch. So you can make simple changes that can help you take as much rest possible with these tips:

  1. Take help from your partner or kin to have to help hand with these essential tasks to give you the much-needed breaks.
  2. Have your bed as near as possible to the baby to make most out of the short breaks by helping you sleep when the baby sleeps – all this rest will add up.
  3. Take a few minutes for yourself – you can have a walk in the lawn or indoors to give yourself a break and also exercise.

Fuel yourself with right nutrition:

Your body has gone through a lot of changes in the last few months it needs proper nourishment to help it get back to the normal state. While the weight gain from your pregnancy can help you with the breastfeeding to take care of your child, what you feed during this postpartum period pave the road for recovery. Focus on having a well-balanced diet with a variety of nutrients and the right amount of carbohydrates, protein, fats. In general, the everyday diet of a new mother must contain whole grains, fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, dairy, protein from low-fat poultry, and fish. Though nutrition is simple, pregnant mothers need a customized plan based on their specific condition which can only be done after a consultation from a gynaecologist.

Having a proper rest in intervals with the right nutrition and proper exercise regime is how a new mother can get back to her pre-pregnant state quickly. However, as said, every individual is different and top of the every pregnancy journey is unique with its own set of problems and characteristics and this is why postpartum check-ups and consultation from a gynaecologist is the essential part of the recovery process. Uterus also refereed as the womb is a muscular reproductive organ that houses and nourishes the fertilized egg until the off-spring is ready to be delivered by the mother. It plays a central role in the female reproductive system and is aptly called the baby house since it is the home for the pre-delivered baby.

However, it is also affected by the variety of gynaecological conditions that impact uterus where these conditions decrease the quality of life for women.

Hysterectomy: Removal of Uterus

In few cases getting the uterus removed could be the safest and most efficient way for a woman to reclaim the gynaecological health. Hysterectomy is the procedure that is performed by a gynaecologist to remove the uterus and improve the gynaecological health of women.

Depending upon the medical condition suffered by a woman, there are many types of hysterectomy procedures are available based on the extent of uterus removal (Sometimes other reproductive parts are removed too) and also the type of surgical procedure adopted to remove the uterus.

Abdominal hysterectomy is the most common and conservative form of hysterectomy surgery procedure available where an incision of about 7 to 10 inches is made near the abdominal area for the removal of the uterus. Since it is an open surgery, it does involve pain, and visible scars and recovery time is also a tad long. Vaginal hysterectomy is another for hysterectomy surgery where an incision is made at the top of the vagina to remove the uterus. This procedure is less invasive as compared to abdominal hysteroscopy, causes minimal scare and has a faster recovery period.

Of all the procedures available laparoscopic hysterectomy is the most advanced and efficient hysterectomy procedures available in Mumbai.

Laparoscopy Hysterectomy Treatment in Mumbai:

Laparoscopic hysterectomy is an advanced minimally invasive hysterectomy procedure that is performed with even more tiny incisions for much quicker recovery devoid of any visible scars. A light source is sent inside through the tiny incisions before which carbon dioxide gas is filled for a clearer view of the insides. A tiny camera for image projection and tiny surgical instruments are sent through other incisions to remove the uterus.

Being an extremely minimally invasive procedure laparoscopic hysterectomy is quick surgery with minimal scars and rapid recovery as compared to other procedures. Given hysterectomy is the second most commonly performed gynaecological surgery procedure, laparoscopic hysterectomy is recommended for its efficiency in removal of the uterus with less post-operative pain, negligible risk of blood loss and complications. And being pregnant puts women at a higher risk of hypertension. According to statistics, number of pregnant women who have developed hypertension tripled in last 5 years in India.

Though hypertension and pregnancy is not generally a dangerous combination, hypertension sometimes can result in fatal complications for both mother and baby when left untreated. As most of the women are unaware of the impact of hypertension, here’s a brief guide about Hypertension during pregnancy, its complications, treatment and preventive measures:

What is hypertension?

Heart pumps the blood into the arteries which carry blood to the other parts of the body. The pressure exerted by the pumped blood on the walls of arteries is called as blood pressure. When this pressure exceeds the normal range, it exerts an undue stress on the heart, kidneys causing health problems, this condition is called as hypertension.

A reading of 120/80 is considered normal and anything above 140 in the numerator is termed as high blood pressure or hypertension. In general during the first and second trimester the blood pressure in pregnant women lowers and it stabilising gradually. Though it is perfectly normal for early pregnancy blood pressure to fluctuate, high blood pressure has become alarmingly common these days in pregnant women and it is important to identify the type of hypertension that is being experienced by the women before it is treated.

Type of Hypertension during Pregnancy:

High blood pressure experienced by the patient during the pregnancy can have different names based on the stage of pregnancy:

Chronic Hypertension:

High blood pressure during early pregnancy i.e. before 20 weeks of pregnancy is called as chronic blood pressure which means that the patient has had the high blood pressure even before she became pregnant. If the condition is Chronic, the patient will experience higher blood pressure levels after the pregnancy as well.

If the patients starts experiencing high blood pressure after 20 weeks of pregnancy, it is called as Gestational hypertension, which is quite common in pregnant women and usually is not a problem. Uncontrolled and severe hypertension can cause serious complications for both women and the baby. As the high blood pressure affects the blood vessels of the mother it can impact the flow of nutrients to the baby through placenta resulting in low weight birth .Hypertension may also result in premature delivery to avoid complications which in turn can cause health complications for the child.
