Food is everything a person need. The tenure of 9 months’ pregnancy is a very happy stage of a woman’s life. You may have to leave your long established eating habits and incorporate good diet routines for nutrition balance which makes you and your little one healthy and beautiful. It is also advised to consult a doctor about your healthy eating. As to present a diet plan, Dr. Neelima Mantri, Female Gynaecologist in Mumbai suggests a proper balanced diet for an expectant mother.
Foods to take:
Eggs: It is a healthy food for those who are not pregnant also. It is understandable that many pregnant women develop aversions towards meat. Whether it is fried, boiled, scrambled – they serve as a golden standard for the healthy pregnancy. The property called Choline develops fetal brain development and reduces neural tube defects.
Nuts: The crunchy little things are not only fun to eat but also contains healthy fats. Any nuts contain brain-boosting omega-3 and magnesium properties are helpful for the little honey’s brain development and nervous system. However, it is recommended to keep the serving of 5-6 nuts every day as they are rich in fat and calories. And it should be stopped immediately after allergic findings. This prenatal power snack on a go reduces premature labour issues and ranked as one of the best foods for pregnant ladies.
Yogurt: Plain and flavoured-less yoghurt got more calcium than milk. Yoghurt will be commonly mistaken with curd in some cultures, but they are two different types in every aspect. Due to its bone-building nutrients, it is one of the strongly recommended diet to be taken by pregnant ladies. It is essential to take at least 3 servings of yoghurt every day to make the baby’s bones stronger, otherwise, the calcium needs for the baby development will be taken from your bones leaving you weaker.
Foods not to take:
Brinjal: Majority of the people don’t like this vegetable, but one of the most common dish every Indian home has once in a week. However, according to Ayurvedic traditions, it is one of the foods which should be limited or avoided by pregnant women. Because of their enriched menstruation-inducing properties, it may lead to abortions.
Fish and sea food: It may be surprising to know that the sea food is harmful for the pregnancy, but it is medically proved. Sushi, shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish are considered dangerous because of high methylmercury. The mercury consumption by mother leads to developmental delays and brain damage of the foetus. Choose to eat salmon, tilapia, shrimp, tuna which have low mercury.
Raw dairy products: Although calcium intake is a must for the expecting, but not all dairy products are safe. A registered dietitian says to avoid raw milk and other raw dairy products, as the unpasteurized products contains Listeria, a germ that cause miscarriages. So, it is not safe to drink raw milk or any products made with raw milk during pregnancy.

Vomiting can take off your energy and leaves you in a miserable state, the scene is even worse during pregnancy. Vomit is common during pregnancy, but there are ways to reduce it. Read on to follow the best and super- easy home remedies for vomiting in pregnancy.
Hydrate: As puking dehydrates the person, sipping water in regular intervals of time make a lot of difference. Intake of sufficient water flushes the harmful toxins out of the body and stop vomiting. Studies proved that drinking water clears 90% of the health issues, apart from vomiting sickness.
Mint: Chewing fresh mint leaves whenever getting sensed or about to vomit will help the lady in sickness issues. The menthol flavour in it soothes the stomach and avoids further occurrences of vomiting.
Ginger Ale: Ginger has an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties by nature and it is one of the best herbal medicines to cure any disease. The smell or the flavour itself helps to get out of the nausea. Prepare a can full of ginger ale solution and take few sips throughout the day.
Baking Soda: Yeah, you read it right!! Baking soda neutralizes the acids that have risen during and after vomiting. Rinse your mouth with the solution to get rid of after taste of puking.
Rice Water: This is a tip from the older generation. Let the rice water gets warm and sip it slowly to notice instant result.
Warm milk: Soak a toast in warm milk and eat it to ease vomiting. There is no scientific proof to support the efficacy of this remedy, however, it is the most recommended home remedy for immediate reaction.
Aniseed: It is what we take after a heavy dinner for fast digestion. It stops vomiting by taking one cup aniseed tea in a day. It has many medicinal values which relieves pain and convulsions that accompany vomiting.
Aromatherapy: People who are other than pregnant can also try the therapy with essential oils. However, lavender and peppermint oils works better to the morning sickness and nausea. Put a few drops of these flavoured oils in the diffuser and inhale the vapours. Spraying them to your handkerchief also works in a better way.
Wheat germ: Wheat germ is a family of wheat; they are the left out particles when wheat is processed to flour. This nutrient-rich also cures menses pains and symptoms such as dizziness and nausea. Dissolve one teaspoon of wheat germ in warm milk and keep it for one hour. Consume it twice a day to reduce morning sickness. It is suggestable to take it upon doctor’s advice because it may cause allergy for some which irritates the digestive tract.
Acupressure: Get to know your pressure points to reduce the illness. Keep three fingers of your right hand on your left wrist and rub it in circular motion for a few minutes. Repeat it with the other hand. Acupressure wrist bands are also available in the market.
Besides these, lemon, onion juice, cumin etc., can also be added to the list of home remedies for morning sickness during pregnancy. Motherhood is full of surprises and struggles. One of the common problem faced is digestion. Many pregnant women complain that there are suffering from watery bowel movements immediately after few hours of taking a meal. And this leads to misconception of miscarriage. Constipation, watery stool, diarrhea are very common symptoms during various stages of pregnancy, especially in earlier trimesters.
What causes it?
Diarrhea can be caused by many factors. Diet changes, vitamin intake, hormonal changes, food addictions are to be blamed. The reasons can be many – letting out all the good-for-you food that you are eating now, excess water intake, prenatal vitamins that you are taking. Besides these common concerns, food poisoning, intestinal parasites can cause a severe diarrhea for the pregnant woman.
What to take?
Stay Hydrated: It is important to stay hydrated in every level of the life. Loose bowel moments remove lot of water from the body, take as much fluids as you can. Diarrhea is not harmful in most of the cases, but severe dehydration of mother can hamper the blood flow for the baby.
BRAT: The famous BRAT diet – banana, rice, applesauce, toast. It is highly recommended because it is gentle on human’s stomach.
Starchy Foods: Potatoes, crackers, cereals can be taken in limits.
Veggies and fruits: Adequate green vegetables and fresh fruits (which are recommended by the nutritionist) are not harmful for the pregnancy. The vegetables in the salads should be boiled not fried or cooked.
What not to take
If you are lactose intolerant, keep away from high fiber grains, dried fruits, dairy products, fatty or spicy foods. A mom-to-be should be very particular on what she eats and drinks. Try to consume fresh foods instead of frozen or preserved.
No to soft drinks: As always (but particularly now) high sugar soft drinks draw water into the stomach and make diarrhea lasts longer. Even the preservative juices are bad on the tummy, instead take sports drinks. Hence say a big no-no to packaged beverages.
Home Remedies:
- Boil a piece of ginger in water and drink the solution once in a day.
- Consume a blend of lemon juice, half a teaspoon of ginger powder and crushed black pepper.
- Mix honey in luke warm water and drink twice a day. Can add lemon for fast reaction.
- Smaller meals: Break your meal for 5-6 smaller ones. Do not gulp but chew the food properly.
- Soak a handful of fenugreek seeds overnight and drink the water in the morning.
Exercise: Pregnant women should avoid heavy exercises, but walking for a few minutes is a must. Expose for some fresh air for 10 – 15 minutes in early morning and after dinner.
Do yoga: Yoga has become a very effective method to reduce the weight of your body and also to be peaceful. Practice some basic yoga asanas which helps you to get rid of gas and also to be easier during labor.
