Pregnancy is a stage in a woman’s life that brings about a sense of permanent change in every aspect of life. Motherhood offers an elevated sense of happiness, however, other key aspects to it may prove to be overwhelming for a few women. The thought of becoming a mother and being responsible for a child is, in fact, a daunting task that requires complete commitment throughout. Thus, the changes associated with it are exasperating, to say the least.

This is precisely where one out of every ten women must seek consultancy when it comes to managing postpartum depression. The situation has become even worse due to the worldwide outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Women have to get accustomed to the changes in their physical appearance, mental well-being, and hormonal alterations. The limitations imposed due to COVID-19 has made the process of pregnancy even more enduring and difficult. The soon to be mothers not only have to keep their emotions in check but also are constantly stressed about the safety of the unborn child. Consequently, there has been a rise in postnatal depression during COVID-19.

Understanding Postpartum Depression

Postpartum Depression is a common condition that is faced by women after childbirth. Women go through a lot of hormonal changes during this period which induces depression, exhaustion, and mood swings. The initial period is known as ‘Baby Blues’ which generally lasts for about 2 weeks from the date of childbirth. However, if this issue continues to pertain then it may result in long term postpartum depression. The sheer weight of the responsibilities that come with motherhood can affect the mental health of a mother causing them to have suicidal thoughts.

The most common symptoms of postpartum depression during the Coronavirus are:
1. Negative thinking
2. Lack of Sleep
3. Lack of motivation
4. Loss of appetite
5. Failing to bond and connect with the newborn child
6. Self-isolation
7. Obsessing about the safety of the newborn

Postpartum depression is of serious concern as it leads to disruption of marriage, social, as well as sexual life.

How to overcome the Postpartum Depression?

1. Seek Expert Advice: If you are suffering from postnatal depression during COVID-19 then seeking professional help should be your primary objective. Various experts possess superior knowledge and experience in this field. Talking about your issues to these professionals is the first step to recovery.

2. Be around your loved ones: Spending time with your partner, friends, and family members is a fantastic treatment solution that can help you to overcome this condition. Be open about your thoughts and do not shy away from admitting the truth such that a solution can be identified immediately.

3. Paying Attention to Individual Needs: Motherhood does not mean that your individual needs and requirements need to be disregarded. A successful relationship entirely depends on the well-being of the individual concerned. Therefore, as a mother, you should give your individual needs priority regardless of the circumstances. Support from your partner is also critical during this phase.
