The situation has become even worse due to the worldwide outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Women have to get accustomed to the changes in their physical appearance, mental well-being, and hormonal alterations. The limitations imposed due to COVID-19 has made the process of pregnancy even more enduring and difficult. The soon to be mothers not only have to keep their emotions in check but also are constantly stressed about the safety of the unborn child. Consequently, there has been a rise in postnatal depression during COVID-19.

Understanding Postpartum Depression

Postpartum Depression is a common condition that is faced by women after childbirth. Women go through a lot of hormonal changes during this period which induces depression, exhaustion, and mood swings. The initial period is known as ‘Baby Blues’ which generally lasts for about 2 weeks from the date of childbirth. However, if this issue continues to pertain then it may result in long term postpartum depression. The sheer weight of the responsibilities that come with motherhood can affect the mental health of a mother causing them to have suicidal thoughts.

The most common symptoms of postpartum depression during the Coronavirus are:
1. Negative thinking
2. Lack of Sleep
3. Lack of motivation
4. Loss of appetite
5. Failing to bond and connect with the newborn child
6. Self-isolation
7. Obsessing about the safety of the newborn

Postpartum depression is of serious concern as it leads to disruption of marriage, social, as well as sexual life.
